USDA cotton, rice crop outlooks up on year

The USDA sees bigger cotton and rice crops in 2024 than 2023.

Upland cotton production is projected at 14.555 million bales, an increase of 24% on the year with a decline in average yield to 828 pounds per acre canceled out by increases in acreage, with planted area at 10.974 million acres and harvested area at 8.442 million acres.

For 2023, upland cotton production was 11.75 million bales with an average yield of 895 pounds per acre on planted area of 10.083 million acres and harvested area of 6.302 million acres.

Rice is estimated at 220.761 million hundredweight, up 2.47 million from last year thanks to larger acreage numbers, 2.94 million for planted and 2.896 million for harvested, despite a slightly lower average yield guess of 7,623 pounds per acre.

A year ago, rice totaled 218.291 million hundredweight, with an average yield of 7,649 pounds per acre on planted area of 2.894 million acres and harvested area of 2.854 million acres.

New crop rice ending stocks were lower on a month-to-month decrease in production and lower beginning stocks, while combined upland and Pima cotton ending stocks fell on a production cut from July and lower exports.

The new marketing year for cotton and rice started August 1st.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production numbers is out September 12th.
