Govt Plans Rs. 990 Million Smart Farming Project

By Muhammad Bilal

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research has proposed a Rs. 990 million project to promote smart farming technologies and strengthen local agricultural machinery development.

The project, titled “Establishment of Digital and Precision Agriculture Mechanisation Facility at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC),” will be implemented by the Agricultural Engineering Institute in Islamabad over five years from July 2026 to June 2031.

The initiative aims to accelerate agricultural mechanisation and introduce precision farming tools, while supporting small farmers, local manufacturers and agri-based SMEs. It is aligned with national development frameworks, including the 5Es Framework, the 13th Five-Year Plan, and the National Agriculture Innovation and Growth Programme.

Under the plan, key facilities such as design, prototype and testing labs will be upgraded with advanced technologies, including 3D scanning, computer-aided design, CNC and laser systems.

The project will also focus on developing modern agricultural equipment using artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, drones and robotics, with plans to establish a dedicated UAV and agricultural robotics facility.

At least five machine prototypes will be developed locally, while training programmes will be conducted for over 500 stakeholders, including farmers, researchers and industry players, to promote adoption of modern farming practices.
