NARAIL, Jan 31, 2026 (BSS): A target has been fixed to cultivate Boro rice on 50,297 hectares of land across three upazilas of the district during the current season, officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) today said.

Boro rice transplantation is going on in full swing in the fields of various villages under Narail Sadar, Lohagara and Kalia upazilas of the district. Farmers are passing a very busy time. From morning till evening, they are busy uprooting seedlings from seedbeds and transplanting them in the fields. 

There is no shortage of fertilizer or irrigation, the DAE officials said that Boro rice is being cultivated on more land this year, breaking the record of last three years, they said.

According to the sources at the DAE, a target has been fixed to cultivate Boro rice on 50,297 hectares of land in the district during the 2025–26 season. In the 2024–25 season,

 Boro rice was cultivated on 50,280 hectares while in the 2023–24 season it was 50,230 hectares. Compared to last year, the target has increased by 17 hectares this year.

Farmers said that due to the severity of cold and fog at the beginning of the Boro season, they were unable to transplant the seedlings of  the rice properly at first. However, as the adverse weather conditions have now changed and bright sunshine prevails, farmers are fully engaged in transplanting  enjoying the mild winter weather.

Sagar Sheikh of Chougacha village under Narail Sadar said, “I am transplanting Rod Miniket rice seedlings on about one and a half acres of land. This variety gives good yield and fetches a good price. The rice is tasty and the straw is also of good quality, which can be sold for extra income.”

Rifayet Sheikh of Raghunathpur village under Kalia upazila said, “I am transplanting Boro rice seedlings on four bighas of land. At present, there is no shortage of seedlings. There are also no problems regarding fertilizer, pesticides or irrigation.”

Deputy Director of the DAE Muhammad Arifur Rahman, said that due to favorable weather, cultivation is progressing rapidly to achieve the Boro target ahead of schedule. 

Farmers are being encouraged to bring fallow land under cultivation. High-yielding Boro rice seeds have been supplied to farmers to increase production. So far, there is no shortage of fertilizer, irrigation or pesticides. Field-level agriculture officers are providing regular advice to farmers, he added.
