Papua focuses on rice sufficiency to lift farmers’ welfare

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) – The Provincial Government of Papua, through its Food Crops, Horticulture, and Food Office, continues to push rice self-sufficiency programs to boost the Farmer Terms of Trade (FTT) and the overall welfare of farmers.

Head of the Papua Food Crops, Horticulture, and Food Office, Lunanka V.M.L. Daimboa, stated here on Sunday that efforts to improve the FTT are being carried out through various programs, primarily by expanding rice planting areas and increasing agricultural production.

“The government’s rice field creation program not only focuses on clearing new land but is also accompanied by other initiatives, such as land optimization and the development of upland rice to support production growth,” she said.

According to Daimboa, an increase in production will naturally lead to a higher FTT.

She affirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture is currently focusing on food self-sufficiency, particularly for rice, with the goal of ensuring balanced progress across all regions, including Papua.

“We urge farmers to maintain both the quality and quantity of their output and make the most of various support programs available to sustainably improve agricultural yields and their own livelihoods,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, Adriana Helena Carolina, Head of the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Papua office, explained that the FTT serves as a vital indicator of the purchasing power of farmers.

“It reflects the exchange value of agricultural products against the goods and services consumed, as well as production costs,” she added.

According to Carolina, Papua’s FTT rose to 103.30 in March 2026.

“The increase occurred because the price index received by farmers rose by 0.40 percent, outperforming the 0.16 percent rise in the price index paid by farmers,” she detailed.

She further said that four subsectors recorded an increase in FTT, with the livestock subsector seeing the highest growth at 0.60 percent.
