BRRI sets up exhibition of 54 Boro rice varieties in Dinajpur

Under the project Locality-based rice variety and technology innovation and existing laboratory development (LSTD), an exceptional exhibition of 54 Boro rice varieties developed by BRRI has been set up in the farmers’ fields in Dinajpur. Implemented under the supervision of the newly established Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Regional Office, Dinajpur under the LSTD project, this exhibition has been planned in such a way that the farmers’ fields have become a controlled research field of BRRI. Through this, farmers will get the opportunity to directly observe the planting methods, plant growth, life span and potential yield of different rice varieties at the same place.
The project stakeholders said that the unique exhibition has been set up with an aim of enabling farmers to select suitable varieties by themselves, taking into account the geographical and environmental suitability of the project area, farmer needs, yield potential, market price and life span. As a result, farmers can easily select varieties compatible with their land and production system, which will help increase productivity and crop density in the future.
Meanwhile, farmers, students and interested visitors from the local area as well as from various surrounding areas are flocking to see this unique exhibition every day. They are expressing satisfaction and interest after coming to the field and witnessing the comparative picture of different varieties of rice.
While talking to LSTD Project Director Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, he said, “Through this practical exhibition in the farmer’s field, farmers will get a real idea not only about the yield, but also about the complete life cycle of a rice variety. In this, they cab select suitable varieties themselves and get directly acquainted with the varieties developed by BRRI.” Head of BRI Regional Office, Dinajpur Dr Selima Jahan said, “Through such field-based activities, the rice varieties developed by BRRI will quickly become known at the farmer level.
At the same time, an effective bridge is being created between research and extension activities.”
According to the concerned, this initiative implemented in the Dinajpur region under the LSTD project is a successful example of farmer-centric research and technology popularization, which will play an important role in sustainable rice production.
