India’s Rice, Wheat Stockpile Swells, Evaporating Import Worries

India’s grain bins are bursting.

As of June 1, rice stocks in government warehouses have surged to an all-time high for this time of year — up 18% from 2024 levels — while wheat reserves have climbed to their highest in four years, thanks to a strong procurement drive. The sharp rise in grain inventories not only signals ample domestic supply but also opens the door for increased rice exports and greater price stability in the months ahead.

According to official data, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) held a record 59.5 million metric tons of rice (including unmilled paddy) — more than four times the government’s July 1 target of 13.5 million tons. Wheat stocks stood at 36.9 million tons, comfortably above the buffer norm of 27.6 million tons.

“This year’s wheat procurement has been the most in four years,” said a Mumbai-based grain dealer. “That gives the government room to release more wheat into the open market during the lean supply season and prevent price spikes.”

India, the world’s largest rice exporter, removed the last of its export restrictions in March 2025, having first imposed them in 2022 to contain domestic food inflation. With stockpiles now swelling, exporters are well-positioned to tap into global demand.

The rebound in wheat stocks is particularly significant. A string of poor harvests in recent years, coupled with weak procurement, had driven up wheat prices and stoked speculation that India might need to import the grain for the first time since 2017. But this year’s procurement — totaling 30 million tons — has reversed that trend.

For now, the growing reserves offer a dual advantage: they bolster India’s food security while giving policymakers levers to cool inflation without resorting to imports. And for Indian farmers, it marks a rare season where strong procurement has translated into better support from the state.

With global food markets still jittery and climate volatility on the radar, India’s grain cushion may prove to be one of its most valuable assets in 2025.
