The Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute (TRRI), Aduthurai, on Monday organised a field day to showcase its new variety AD18145, proposed for release as ADT 62.

Officials from TRRI and the Agriculture Department, farmers, and B.Sc. (Agriculture) students from PAJANCOA, Karaikal, participated. Prior to the event, participants visited the demonstration plots and viewed the grain samples.

In his address, TRRI Director K. Subrahmaniyan said CR 1009 and ADT 51 was raised on nearly half the area during the samba season in the Cauvery delta. However, CR 1009 was prone to pests, diseases and lodging during heavy rain, while ADT 51 showed lodging when excess fertilizer was applied. To address these challenges, AD18145 had been developed as a short, bold-grain, high-yielding variety suited for samba cultivation. The semi-dwarf culture matured in 145–150 days, had a sturdy stem, erected tillers and non-lodging characteristics.

Progressive farmers Sekar and Kalyanasundaram shared their experience, noting its pest- and disease-free growth.
