MANILA, Philippines — Farmers in certain rice-growing areas are encouraged to adopt cost-saving practices to reduce planting expenses, as rising global input costs continue to impact production costs, the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) said.

PhilRice agriculturist Fredierick Saludez said using certified seeds, properly leveling fields, and adopting efficient planting methods could result in savings of thousands of pesos per hectare.

Saludez said sourcing inbred certified seeds from accredited seed growers is one of the easiest ways to reduce expenses.

“Certified seeds not only help reduce seed requirements. They also contribute to better crop establishment, more uniform growth, and higher yield potential,” Saludez added.

PhilRice said in the case of transplanted rice, farming expenses can decrease by around P460 to P1,220 per hectare (ha) to around P880-P1,760 per ha if farmers follow its recommendation of using 20 to 40 kilograms (kg) per ha of certified seeds.

Typically, farmers spend approximately P1,980 for utilizing 66 kg of seeds per hectare.

PhilRice said that for direct-seeded rice, using proper seeding rates and certified seeds may reduce seed expenses by about P720 to P1,460 per ha.

Saludez also said good land preparation can help reduce planting problems and lower production costs.

Citing studies, proper land leveling may cut expenses to approximately P7,750 per ha from P9,600 per ha, along with improving crop management efficiency.

“Properly leveled fields make irrigation management easier and help ensure uniform crop growth,” Saludez said.

He explained that uneven land preparation can lead to poor water distribution and more difficult management of weeds and invasive apple snails, increasing costs during the season.

Furthermore, Saludez advised farmers to explore mechanized planting options, including mechanical transplanters and drum seeders, which may lower transplanting expenses by about P300 per ha while reducing labor requirements and seed use. /atm
