Pakistan $1.5B Hybrid Rice Market in China
by News Desk

Pakistan could unlock a $1.5 billion export opportunity by expanding hybrid rice sales to China. Demand for Pakistani non-Basmati rice is growing, creating new opportunities for exporters.
Rice Exports to China Surge
Pakistan’s rice shipments to China recorded strong growth in early 2026. Exports reached more than $45.19 million in the first quarter, compared with $7.39 million during the same period in 2025.
This represents a 511% increase, according to Chinese customs data. The sharp rise highlights growing demand for Pakistani rice in the Chinese market.
China Offers Major Growth Potential
Industry estimates suggest China could eventually import up to $1.5 billion worth of Pakistani hybrid rice. However, exporters will need to meet Chinese quality, food safety, and supply requirements.
The opportunity comes as Pakistan seeks to strengthen its agricultural exports and diversify its rice markets.
Pakistan’s Rice Exports Face Decline
Pakistan’s overall rice exports have declined from their record levels. In FY2024-25, the country exported 5.82 million tonnes of rice worth $3.35 billion.
Non-Basmati rice accounted for more than 86% of total shipments. However, rice export earnings later fell to around $2.29 billion in FY2025-26.
Therefore, expanding access to China could help Pakistan revive rice export growth.
New Hybrid Rice Variety Boosts Potential
Pakistan is also improving its domestic hybrid rice production. Punjab University and Wuhan University developed the PU-786 variety to support higher yields.
The new variety can produce up to 140 maunds per acre. It also offers resistance to diseases, heat, and pests.
Moreover, stronger yields could help Pakistani farmers meet rising export demand while improving agricultural productivity.
China Market Offers New Opportunity
Pakistan’s growing rice shipments to China show the market’s potential. Hybrid rice could further strengthen this trade relationship.
At the same time, exporters must maintain consistent quality and meet China’s food safety standards. If Pakistan can address these requirements, the country could significantly expand its presence in China’s rice market.
