Ogun trains 12,626 farmers in improved rice, cassava technology

The Ogun State government has facilitated the training of 12,626 farmers in production technology for cassava and rice under the FGN/OGSG Value Chain Development Programme.

This was revealed by the acting State Programme Coordinator, Mrs Temitope Ajisafe, during the presentation of the progress report to the State Value Chain Steering Committee in Abeokuta, chaired by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Bolu Owotomo.

Owotomo disclosed that the VCDP programme objective was aimed at enhancing a sustainable basic income and food security for poor rural households, who were engaged in the production, processing and marketing of rice and cassava in the state and eight other states.

Owotomo commended the programme for efficiently and effectively managing the resources, adding that more efforts should be made to ensure that there are more local governments participating in the programme.

He noted, “More land would be made available for farmers.”

Speaking, Ajisafe stated that a total of 12,116 farmers had adopted at least one technology promoted by the programme with 6,287 farmers benefitting from the matching grants for production input, provided with recommended rate of seeds, fertilizer and agro chemical, while 4,862 youth farmers were trained in spraying techniques and other enterprises between 2019 and 2023.
