Mitsui partners with NGO to promote water-saving rice farming, cut methane emissions in Bangladesh

Mitsui plans to use the resulting emission reductions to generate carbon credits and aims to begin launching such credits as early as next year.

Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. has partnered with the Bangladesh Bondhu Foundation to promote sustainable agriculture in Bangladesh, focusing on a water-saving rice cultivation technique known as alternate wetting and drying.

The method involves periodically draining rice paddies rather than keeping them continuously flooded. Mitsui said the approach can reduce methane emissions by about 30% by lowering the release of the greenhouse gas associated with traditional flooded fields, says Nikkei.

The technique is also designed to conserve water by using a cycle of wetting and drying instead of constant inundation, making it more efficient in regions facing water scarcity.

Mitsui plans to use the resulting emission reductions to generate carbon credits and aims to begin launching such credits as early as next year, the company said.

The Bangladesh project comes as part of a broader push by Japanese trading houses to expand into environmental, social and governance-focused businesses. Mitsui has been diversifying its portfolio into areas including carbon-capture technology, geothermal energy for data centres, and digital securities linked to aircraft and ships.
