The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Good Neighbors International (GNI) have signed a collaborative agreement with the aim of strengthening food security and stabilizing the incomes of rice farmers in Central Luzon. The agreement was signed on May 20, 2024, at the IRRI Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna, and represents a significant step forward in the advancement of research and extension activities in rice-based farming systems, starting from the heart of the Philippines’ rice-producing region.

Under the leadership of Dr. Yvonne Pinto, Director General of IRRI, and Director General Sun Kim of GNI, this strategic alliance sets out to tackle the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change while propelling sustainable agricultural practices. Dr. Pinto highlighted the significance of this collaboration, highlighting its synergy with IRRI’s ongoing initiatives such as OneRicePH, a flagship program aimed at optimizing rice breeding strategies and variety distribution in collaboration with the Philippine Department of Agriculture.

Director General Sun Kim echoed Dr. Pinto’s sentiments, highlighting the essential role of international cooperation in addressing global issues of poverty, hunger, and food insecurity. He underscored the importance of leveraging IRRI’s unparalleled expertise in rice research to enhance food security not only in the Philippines but across the globe.

Central to this partnership is the incorporation of GNI’s grassroots-level capacity development initiatives with IRRI’s cutting-edge research in rice science. Both organizations are poised to empower rice farmers with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to thrive in the face of evolving climatic conditions by harnessing their respective strengths.

Looking ahead, the collaborative efforts will focus on enhancing food security and sustainable livelihoods by strengthening climate-resilient rice research. This will involve collaborating with local agricultural centers to boost infrastructure and systems for drought screening and breeding, implementing capacity-building programs through GNI’s Community Agricultural Management Program (CAMP), and distributing climate-resilient rice varieties with IRRI’s technical support.

With an eye towards the future, the initiative is scheduled to kick off in 2025, preceded by a series of preparatory meetings and field visits. The initiative aspires to usher in a new era of prosperity for rice farmers in Central Luzon and serve as a beacon of hope for agricultural communities worldwide by leveraging the collective expertise of IRRI and GNI.

As the collaboration develops, it has the potential to make a lasting impact on Central Luzon’s agricultural environment and provide hope for a more resilient and sustainable future.
