International markets: Pakistani rice must command premium value: Gilani

By Recorder Report
KARACHI: Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has called for a strategic transformation of Pakistan’s agriculture sector, shifting the focus from expanding production volumes to quality-driven, high-value and export-oriented production.
Speaking as the Chief Guest at the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) Export Trophy Awards ceremony here on Monday night, the Chairman Senate congratulated the award recipients and extended appreciation to the farming and exporting communities whose relentless hard work carries Pakistani rice from local fields to global markets.
Chairman Senate noted that national rice production has reached nearly 10 million tons. “Our future is not simply about producing more; it is about producing better,” Gilani declared, emphasizing that production is only the foundational step.
He stressed that Pakistani rice must command premium value in international markets through advanced agricultural research, modern milling technologies, consistent quality controls, aggressive national branding, and value-added product development.
Drawing on his personal background as an agriculturist from South Punjab, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani reiterated his deep connection to the farming community. “I have seen firsthand what the farmer means to our economy and our communities. When we strengthen our farmers, we strengthen Pakistan,” he stated.
The Chairman Senate commended REAP for unifying the rice sector and setting a clear trajectory toward a USD5 billion export target.
Reaffirming his commitment as Chairman Senate and a fellow agriculturist, Gilani assured the business community that the House of Federation stands firmly behind them to support policy initiatives, strengthen the agrarian economy, and position Pakistan’s agricultural enterprise as a global leader.
He concluded by praying for the prosperity of Pakistan’s farming community and expressing full conviction that united national commitment will successfully turn industry potential into sustainable progress.
On the occasion, Awards were distributed among top exporters. The ceremony was attended by newly elected chairman REAP Muhammad Raza, Member Executive Committee Karachi Chamber of Commerce Muzzammil Chappal, former chairman REAP, Abdul Rahim Jano, Rafique Suleman, Chela Ram, Mehmood Moulvi and others.
