Farmers urged to store rice amid price drop

Kampong Cham Governor Un Chanda addresses the Provincial Council’s 8th Ordinary Meeting of the 4th Mandate on January 9. Kampong Cham Provincial Hall

Kampong Cham Governor Un Chanda has asked the Provincial Departments of Agriculture and Commerce to assist farmers and rice brokers in preserving their rice as market prices decline.

Speaking on January 9, during the Provincial Council’s 8th Ordinary Meeting of the 4th Mandate, Chanda acknowledged the challenges faced by dry-season rice farmers due to plummeting prices.

Farmers have expanded rice production to over 40,000 hectares, with mixed crops on another 100,000 hectares now being harvested. While prices for agricultural products were reasonable in late 2024, rice prices have dropped significantly in early 2025.

Traders are currently purchasing rice at 750 riels per kilogram and cassava at 300 riels per kilogram.

Chanda stated these prices yield minimal profit, insufficient for farmers burdened by modern farming costs like equipment rentals.

To mitigate dissatisfaction, he urged farmers to store their rice, as prices are expected to rise by late January.

He also encouraged rice mill brokers to buy rice, dry it, and either sell later at higher prices or process it for further production. By implementing these measures, the governor aims to help farmers improve their returns and navigate current market challenges effectively.
