Online Desk

Bangladesh has retained its position among the world’s leading rice-producing countries, with output rising by 3% to 37.7 million tonnes in marketing year 2025, according to data from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
The country produced 36.6 million tonnes of rice in the previous marketing year, meaning output increased by around 1.1 million tonnes. Bangladesh harvested rice from approximately 11.8 million hectares during the period.
With 37.7 million tonnes of production, Bangladesh accounted for around 7% of global rice output, placing it behind only India and China among the world’s major producers.
India topped the global ranking with 154 million tonnes, accounting for 28% of total production, followed closely by China with 146.3 million tonnes, or 27%.
Bangladesh remained ahead of Indonesia, which produced 33.8 million tonnes, Vietnam with 26.2 million tonnes and Thailand with 20.7 million tonnes.
Global rice production reached 545.5 million tonnes in marketing year 2025, covering May 2025 to April 2026. This represented a 0.59% increase from 542.3 million tonnes in the previous year.
Bangladesh’s 3% production growth therefore significantly outpaced the overall increase in global rice output.
The figures underline Bangladesh’s continued importance in global rice production, with the staple crop remaining central to the country’s food security, rural economy and agricultural sector.
