Vietnam’s rice export prices have risen sharply as tightening supplies and growing weather concerns lift the regional market.

Nhandan reported that rice prices across Asia are increasing amid fears that the return of the El Niño weather pattern, together with higher fertiliser and fuel costs, could disrupt production and global supply.

International weather agencies expect El Niño to develop in late 2026 and early 2027, bringing drought conditions to major rice-producing countries including India, Thailand, Indonesia and Australia. The dry weather is expected to reduce harvests and affect a range of agricultural commodities.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) reported that its Rice Price Index rose 2.7% in May from the previous month. Vietnam recorded the strongest increase among major exporters as limited domestic supply pushed prices higher, while Thai rice also gained on concerns over potential weather-related shortages.

By contrast, rice prices in India and Pakistan came under pressure due to weaker import demand.

Vietnam’s export price for 5% broken rice currently stands at $412 per tonne, up $18 from the beginning of May. Comparable rice from Thailand is priced at $480 per tonne, while India’s equivalent is selling for $350 per tonne.

During May, Vietnam exported more than 902,000 tonnes of rice worth $430.2mn. In the first five months of 2026, exports reached over 4.27mn tonnes valued at $2.01bn. Export volumes edged up 1.86% compared with the same period last year, although total export earnings fell 7.38% as average prices remained lower year-on-year.

The average export price exceeded $470 per tonne, down 17.53% from the corresponding period in 2025.

Looking ahead, the global rice market is expected to remain volatile for the rest of the year. However, stronger prices and steady supply could create opportunities for Vietnam to strengthen its rice exports if market conditions remain favourable.
