Pakistan’s rice exports to China surge by 121% in first five months of 2025

by Newsdesk.

Islamabad: Pakistan’s rice exports to China have seen a remarkable surge, increasing by 121% in the first five months of 2025. This significant growth underscores deepening trade ties and stronger agricultural cooperation between the two nations, particularly under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
According to Ghulam Qadir, Trade and Investment Counsellor at the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing, data from the General Administration of Customs of China reveals that from January to May 2025, Pakistan exported rice worth $32.076 million to China, a substantial jump from $14.53 million in the same period of 2024.
The primary driver of this growth has been semi- or wholly-milled rice (commodity code 10063020), which alone accounted for $26.68 million and 60,769 metric tons in volume.

Pakistani rice varieties, especially Super Basmati and IRRI-6, have gained popularity among Chinese importers due to their aroma, elongation, and suitability for Chinese culinary applications.
Pakistani rice generally offers a higher milling yield rate (68–70%) compared to domestic Chinese varieties (66–68%), providing cost-efficiency for processors and enhancing shelf presentation for retailers.

Pakistani rice is predominantly utilized in China’s retail market, particularly among urban middle-class consumers seeking premium South Asian varieties. A growing portion, estimated at 30-35%, is also being absorbed by the food processing industry for ready-to-eat meals and instant rice dishes.
