Astungkara Way: Leading Bali’s Regenerative Rice Farming Revolution

by Razi Faruqi Pasha

Astungkara Way is at the forefront of Bali’s regenerative agriculture movement, committed to revitalising the island’s farming practices through sustainable and innovative methods.

Established in January 2021, we partner with local farmers, local and international academics, and impact investors to spearhead a regenerative rice farming initiative that blends modern ecological practices with traditional Balinese farming techniques. Our mission is to restore Bali’s agricultural heritage, empower the next generation of farmers, and contribute to the island’s environmental sustainability.

Our Approach

The heart of our method is the concept of tumpang sari, a biodiverse approach to rice cultivation that creates multiple revenue streams for participating farmers. This technique promotes biodiversity, improves soil health, and reduces the environmental footprint of farming. By marrying these time-tested methods with contemporary regenerative practices, we are building a resilient agricultural system that supports both the environment and Bali’s farmers.

Astungkara Way is dedicated to making this transition risk-free for farmers by offering comprehensive training, micro-financing opportunities, and access to sustainable markets. Our holistic approach ensures that farmers can improve their livelihoods while contributing to the restoration of Bali’s ecosystems.

Training and Development

In 2023, our team, along with a pioneering group of 16 Balinese farmers, participated in an extensive training programme led by Dr. Uma Khumairah, SP., M.Sc., a professor at Brawijaya University, in Complex Rice Agrosystems. This training equipped our farmers with the skills to implement regenerative practices effectively, transforming their rice fields into thriving ecosystems. The combination of expert knowledge and local wisdom has positioned Astungkara Way as a leader in sustainable agriculture in Bali.

Advocacy for Sustainable Farming Practices

Astungkara Way is actively advocating for natural farming practices across Bali. We collect and analyse data to demonstrate the long-term viability of regenerative farming, showcasing its benefits for farmers’ livelihoods, food security, and biodiversity. Our research highlights how regenerative methods, including tumpang sari, can regenerate soil biology and enrich the island’s ecosystems.

Empowering the Next Generation of Farmers

We believe that the future of Bali’s agriculture lies in the hands of its youth. Astungkara Way is committed to empowering the next generation of farmers by offering them the tools, training, and resources they need to build a sustainable and prosperous future. Through our programmes, young farmers are reconnecting with their cultural heritage and gaining the knowledge necessary to lead Bali into a new era of regenerative farming. In the past nine months, we have multiplied the number of farmers we’re working with. Today, we almost have 200 farmers.
