Visible Industries plans to invest in Kenya’s rice value chain ecosystem

Kenya’s heavy dependence on imported rice is creating a major opportunity for domestic farmers and processors, with a new market-led private-sector initiative seeking to expand production, strengthen post-harvest handling and increase local milling capacity.

KENYA – Visible Industries Ltd (VIL) plans to launch its rice value-chain ecosystem in Mwea in the first quarter of 2027, targeting one of Kenya’s most important rice-producing regions.

Kenya currently imports approximately 80% of its domestic milled rice requirement, totaling nearly one million metric tonnes annually.

At a wholesale value of roughly KES 150 (US$1.16) per kilogram, this heavy reliance on foreign supply represents an immense economic opportunity cost of nearly KES 150 billion (US$1.16B) per year.

Despite agro-ecological potential to cultivate at least half of this import volume across regions such as Mwea, Nyanza, Tana River, Busia, and emerging Highland Rice zones, local smallholders operate at roughly 30% of their production capacity because of fragmented value chains and unstructured financing models.

To resolve this structural imbalance, Visible Industries Ltd has proposed a market-first ecosystem designed to coordinate demand, post‑harvest handling and finance around a central processing hub, set to launch in Mwea in the first quarter of 2027.

Moving away from traditional production-centric models that invest in farming before securing end demand, Visible Industries prioritizes a demand-driven model.

The company has already secured firm off-take commitments from corporate buyers with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) mandates, creating a direct pathway to market for local growers.

To address regional post-harvest bottlenecks, Visible Industries has partnered with Kanyoni Rice Millers to build a large end-to-end processing hub near Makutano in Embu County.

The plant, nearing completion at Makutano in Embu County, will feature 100 tonnes per day milling capacity, 42,000 square metres of storage, automated paddy drying machinery and two acres of specialized drying floor.

By addressing the region’s post‑harvest bottleneck, paddy drying, storage and milling, the facility aims to reduce quality losses and spoilage, enabling milled rice to meet corporate offtaker specifications consistently.

To manage systemic risk, agricultural collateral partner Mali-Yetu has been onboarded to handle intake quality assurance, collateral management, all-risk insurance, and digital fintech linkages to buyers via a commodity exchange mechanism.

Crucially, the entire transaction network operates under the legal framework of Kenya’s Warehouse Receipt System Council Act No. 8 of 2019 and its Electronic Warehousing System (eWRS) Regulations.

Receipts issued at the Kanyoni facility are registered directly on the national registry, granting lenders and investors a statutory security interest.

By integrating guaranteed off-take contracts, modern infrastructure, comprehensive insurance, and statutory de-risking, the ecosystem aims to boost local mill capacity, empower smallholders, and significantly reduce Kenya’s foreign rice import bill over the coming decade.
