Unity State begins rice harvest in push for food security

Unity State has launched the harvest of a rice project initiated in December 2024, as part of efforts to boost agricultural production.

Governor Riek Bim Top attended the event in Bentiu, where he emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency in food production.

The project, implemented by the Coalition for Humanity Organization with funding from the European Union, aims to support local farmers and improve food security.

Speaking at the harvest on Wednesday, Governor Top pledged to work with partners and farmers to strengthen agricultural output. He urged South Sudanese to rely on farming rather than imported goods.

“I want to encourage our people in all places that agriculture is very important and we want our people to go for cultivation. Shopping in the market is not working for us. We are harvesting and I will not go to the market but will start shopping right here,” he said.

Unity State’s Agriculture Minister, James Gai, said the project demonstrated the government’s commitment to food security, adding that local farmers would benefit significantly.

A resident, Nyamuch Tut, said the rice farming initiative served as an example of the benefits of agriculture.
