The Bangladesh Food Security Network (Khani), an organisation working on food security and farmer rights, has called for the introduction of rationing for the nation’s poor and vulnerable population amidst a continuous surge in rice prices.

The organisation expressed deep concern over the “abnormal increase” in rice prices and overall inflation during a series of human chain protests held across various districts, including the capital Dhaka, today (1 July).

According to updated data from the Planning Commission for June 2025, the impact of rising rice prices alone accounted for approximately 40% of the overall food inflation in May. Despite adequate rice production and supply during the recent Boro season, the market has failed to see the anticipated relief.

The nationwide human chain, held under the slogan “Restore comfort on rice,” took place in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Noakhali.

Participants urged the government to take immediate action to resolve this pressing public crisis.
