Rice export markets expanded to navigate external fluctuations
VOV.VN – Diversifying export markets is becoming a crucial strategy for Vietnam’s rice industry to enhance resilience against external uncertainties, as eight-month shipments reached 6 million tonnes valued at US$2.86 billion, despite a 6% drop in average export prices.

In addition to reinforcing traditional markets, the sector is expanding into new, high-value niche segments to secure stable outlets for Vietnamese rice. In August, ST25 rice bags appeared on shelves in Germany. Meeting stringent origin and quality requirements demands rigorous oversight spanning from seed selection and farming areas to production.
However, getting onto shelves is only the first step; to maintain the trust of distributors and consumers, product quality must continue to be monitored throughout the business process.
Finding new directions must go hand in hand with consolidating traditional markets. The Philippines, Vietnam’s largest rice consumer in recent times with a market share exceeding 43%, is currently conducting a preliminary safeguard investigation into imported rice.
An interagency delegation led by the Ministry of Industry and Trade recently held working sessions with the Philippine side. The Philippines affirmed that Vietnam remains a primary rice supplier to the island nation and agreed to a Vietnamese proposal to upgrade the existing bilateral rice trade Memorandum of Understanding.
Meanwhile, Indonesia has no plans to import rice in 2026 due to high domestic production and reserves, while African markets have reduced purchases of Vietnamese rice as prices exceed those from India and Pakistan. These present clear challenges ahead. Looking toward the end of the year, rice prices are forecast to remain stable and recover, though a sharp, widespread surge is unlikely.
Rice exports are gradually shifting from a focus on volume to quality, targeting high-value markets. To capitalize on these opportunities, enterprises must proactively diversify markets, enhance product quality and value, and closely monitor changes in regulations and tariffs in major importing countries.
