Plea for stable crop prices

The Commerce Ministry plans to present requests from the private sector to stabilise rice and crop prices to the National Rice Policy and Management Committee (NRPMC) tomorrow.
Following a meeting with four agricultural associations last week, Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun said they sought government support for water sources, seeds, production costs such as fertiliser, pesticide and fuel, product distribution as well as other supportive measures.
The four participants were the Thai Rice Mills Association, the Thai Northeastern Rice Mills Association, the Thai Agriculturist Association, and the Crops Grower & Merchandise Association.
Mrs Suphajee said the ministry and NRPMC want to formulate appropriate and balanced measures that benefit all stakeholders.
She said the ministry gathered inputs and suggestions from various stakeholders to develop strategies for farmers and operators in the agricultural production supply chain. Some farmers were advised to conduct pilot projects to grow alternative crops in suitable planting areas. The authorities offer financial support for farmers to help mitigate risks and increase productivity.
With a surplus of 3-4 million tonnes of paddy rice this year, the ministry has implemented measures to manage the excess, including the production of bagged rice for distribution through various government agencies domestically, as well as expediting government-to-government negotiations for rice exports to steadily release the output to international markets.
The Crops Grower & Merchandise Association urged the government to set up recommended purchasing prices for domestic maize. Feed mills in the Bangkok area are required to purchase maize with a moisture content of 14.5% at 9.8 baht per kilogramme, while for maize with a moisture content of 30% the price is 7.05 baht per kg.
Mrs Suphajee directed the Department of Internal Trade and Provincial Commercial Affairs Offices to monitor maize trading and take appropriate action against any unfair trade practices.
