NFA promotes responsible rice consumption during NRAM

PAGADIAN CITY, (PIA) — The National Food Authority (NFA) Zamboanga del Sur urged the public to value rice and support local farmers at the culmination of the observance of National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM).
Speaking during the Kapihan sa PIA ug DXPR, NFA Provincial Branch Manager Engineer Rogelio Antonio B. Lumo emphasized that the celebration highlights responsible consumption of the staple food and the crucial role of farmers in sustaining the country’s food supply.
Lumo said the campaign reinforces the importance of reducing wastage, especially at a time when rice prices remain high.
He reminded consumers to be mindful, noting that responsible consumption helps ensure a stable supply and supports the livelihood of local farmers.
He also encouraged residents to choose locally produced rice, explaining that it directly increases farmers’ income and promotes healthier options.
“Local rice varieties, such as brown, black, and red, have more fiber and antioxidants,” he said, emphasizing the nutritional value of native varieties compared to imported grains.
Lumo shared that the agency supports farmers in getting higher buying prices that remain competitive against local traders.
He said NFA does not purchase palay below Php17 per kilo for fresh harvests and no lower than Php30 per kilo for dried grains, with some LGUs adding value through top-up incentives.
“Kumalarang, for example, adds Php3 per kilo while the provincial government adds Php2, which significantly improves farmers’ earnings,” he added.
To make procurement more accessible, the agency also deploys a Mobile Procurement Team that goes directly to barangays in coordination with LGUs and farmers’ associations.
Lumo noted that this strategy reduces transportation burden on farmers and encourages more of them to participate in the program.
He reported that the Zamboanga del Sur NFA branch has surpassed its annual procurement target, reaching nearly 200 percent of the 280,000-bag goal.
He said that the current branch inventory can sustain the province’s rice requirements for about 165 days, allowing the NFA to extend support to other regions affected by calamities.
The NFA reiterated its call for the public to value local production, reduce wastage, and practice responsible consumption to ensure a stable and secure rice supply for Zamboanga del Sur. (EDT/HTB/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)
