Indonesia’s rice reserves secure at 4.5 million tons: Minister

Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA) – Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that the government rice reserves managed by state-owned logistics firm Bulog remain stable at 4.5 million tons amid tensions in the Middle East.
“Now, it stands at around 4.5 million tons. This is the highest in the history of this republic,” he said on the sidelines of a visit to a Bulog warehouse in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Sunday.
According to him, the reserves have been made secure thanks to the government’s policies to increase production in a short period, thereby helping the country achieve self-sufficiency in the commodity.
Some of the policies include raising the government purchase price for unhusked rice to Rp6,500 per kilogram, a 20 percent reduction in subsidized fertilizer prices, the transition to modern agriculture, and various other strategic initiatives.
“The President’s top priority programs have proven capable of increasing rice production in a short period, just one year,” he stated.
According to him, current stock levels have even exceeded available warehouse capacity, forcing the government to secure additional storage space through leasing schemes.
In regions, the increase in reserves has also been significant, especially in South Sulawesi, whose stock currently reaches 761,000 tons—double the previous amount.
“Rice stocks across Indonesia currently stand at 4.5 million tons. Within the next 20 days, that is expected to reach 5 million tons, and stocks may hit 6 million tons in the next two months,” he remarked.
He ensured that the abundant stocks had been verified directly through comprehensive checks on the ground.
With these achievements, the government is optimistic that national food security will remain stable in the long term.
Minister Sulaiman added that, considering current stocks, reserves in hotels, restaurants, and cafes, and the ongoing harvest potential, the national food supply is guaranteed to be secure.
“This means we are set for the next 11 months. The food supply for the Indonesian people is secure for the next 11 months,” he asserted.
