Indonesia Sets 1 Million Tons of Rice for Export in 2026

Reporter: M. Faiz Zaki

TEMPO.COJakarta – Indonesia’s State-Owned Logistics Agency (Bulog) is preparing a quota for rice exports that will be implemented this year. The President Director of Bulog, Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani,  the quota fulfillment comes from a total of 3,351,900 tons of rice stocks recorded as of January 8, 2026.

“We have 1 million tons in stock for export with premium quality,” he said at the Bulog National Meeting in Jakarta on Sunday, January 11, 2026.

Rizal explained that Bulog is still exploring the destination countries for rice exports in the Southeast Asian region. Bulog staff discussed this plan with all ASEAN trade attaches in a meeting.

The export quota to be distributed is claimed to still be able to meet domestic needs, especially during the Chinese New Year, entering the month of Ramadan, and Eid al-Fitr. The quota size is also in accordance with the direction of the Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman.

“We haven’t received any response from each embassy, especially the trade attaches,” said Rizal.

Previously, Rizal said that the current rice reserve is 3.35 million tons to ensure availability until Eid al-Fitr. If there is a surplus, it has the potential to be redirected for export to Malaysia, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea.

The export initiative will be carried out in line with the government’s decision to no longer import consumer rice starting in 2026. President Prabowo Subianto also claimed that Indonesia has been rice self-sufficient since December 2025.

After speaking with trade attaches from ASEAN countries, Rizal hopes to receive answers in the coming weeks or months. “In the next few weeks or months, we may already have answers from several of these countries,” he said.

This year, Bulog aims to absorb 4 million tons of rice from farmers. Thus, the total rice reserves based on data from January 8, 2025, plus the absorption target, will be 7 million tons in 2026.
