Gresik, E. Java (ANTARA) – Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman offered to export at least 10,000 tons of premium rice to Singapore, supported by a robust national rice reserve that has outgrown state storage capacities.

“We propose exporting a minimum of 10,000 tons of rice from Indonesia to Singapore,” Minister Amran said in his statement, confirmed from Gresik, East Java, on Monday.

The export plan was discussed during a bilateral meeting with Singaporean Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu at the Ministry of Agriculture Headquarters in Jakarta, to strengthen food cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Amran explained that the export opportunity is driven by Indonesia’s current high national rice production.

The government’s rice reserve stock (CBP), managed by the State Logistics Agency (Bulog), has reached approximately 5.1 million tons.

As Bulog’s existing warehouse infrastructure can only accommodate around three million tons, the government has been forced to store the remaining surplus in rented warehouses.

In addition to rice, Indonesia is exploring options to increase exports of other strategic food commodities to Singapore, including chicken, eggs, palm oil, and coconuts.

The two nations also agreed to boost collaboration through agricultural technology and innovation exchanges to bolster regional food security.

Amran noted that rice exports to Singapore are not entirely new, as the trade has previously been carried out by private businesses.

The current framework being explored introduces a cooperation scheme between Indonesian state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private partners in Singapore to expand formal food trade.

Meanwhile, Singaporean Minister Grace Fu expressed appreciation for the progress of Indonesia’s agricultural sector, attributing the higher yields to heavy investments in research, technology, superior seeds, and mechanization.

“The increase in yields and productivity is very impressive,” Fu remarked, adding that because Singapore imports the majority of its food, the potential to expand supply lines from Indonesia presents an excellent opportunity.

Singapore remains one of Indonesia’s strategic agricultural trading partners.

By 2025, the bilateral agricultural commodity trade value between the two nations is expected to reach approximately US$849.6 million, with Indonesian exports accounting for US$482.9 million and imports from Singapore standing at US$366.7 million.
