India: Broken rice prices rise over 5% in three weeks amid supply concerns

  • International 100% broken rice prices cross $360/t amid supply concerns
  • Broken rice WPI inflation rises to 5.38% in September from 4.37% in August

India’s broken rice prices have increased in the past three weeks amid rising international prices, higher demand from ethanol producers and concerns over domestic availability. The price movement has also raised the possibility of renewed government restrictions on broken rice exports to maintain adequate domestic supplies.

Domestic broken rice prices record an increase

The all-India average wholesale price of broken rice increased to INR 3,036/quintal on 2 November 2026 from INR 2,883/quintal on 10 October, marking a 5.3% increase in just over three weeks. The rise indicates increasing domestic price pressure. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation for broken rice also accelerated to 5.38% y-o-y in September 2026 from 4.37% in August, reflecting higher wholesale price inflation.

Export restrictions may return amid supply concerns

International prices of 100% broken rice have crossed $360/t, while increasing demand from ethanol producers has added to domestic supply concerns. There is possibility of fresh export restrictions as rising domestic and international prices raise concerns over availability. Any renewed restrictions would aim to ensure sufficient broken rice supplies for domestic requirements.

Outlook

Broken rice prices and domestic availability will remain key factors to monitor amid rising demand from ethanol producers and firm international prices. Continued price increases could intensify concerns over domestic supply and increase the likelihood of government intervention in export policies. Further developments will depend on domestic stock availability, demand from ethanol manufacturers and global price movements.
