Hun Sen urges govt to improve irrigation to boost crop yields

Senate President Hun Sen has called on the government to intensify efforts to improve irrigation systems to support farmers and enhance rice cultivation and overall crop productivity. Speaking during the joint session of the National Assembly and Senate yesterday, Mr Hun Sen said the most pressing issue in the agricultural sector is the need for a reliable water supply. “If there are more irrigation systems, the agricultural sector will thrive. Whether it’s rice or other crops, they all need water,” he said.

“Solving the water problem is essential for increasing crop production, strengthening agriculture to raise yields, and reducing deforestation caused by population growth. This is the core of our agricultural strategy,” he said. He further urged the government to expand rice and crop production for the benefit of the people. For example, he noted, one hectare of rice land used to feed five people—now it can support 10 or even 20.

However, increasing the number of harvests from once to twice or even three times a year takes time and requires sufficient water. Therefore, resolving the water issue is critical, Mr Hun Sen said.

In a coordinated effort to promote rural development and agricultural productivity, the Ministry of Rural Development, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries convened a joint meeting last week. The objective was to bolster support for modern farming communities, water-use farming groups, and model villages.

The collaboration aims to deliver high efficiency and long-term impact through a unified implementation approach. The inter-ministerial meeting served as a platform to review current progress and set out strategic plans for future cooperation.
