The government today (22 January) started selling rice at subsidised prices under an additional Open Market Sale (OMS) programme in 419 upazilas across the country, aiming to stabilise the rice market and provide relief to consumers.

Under the programme, one tonne of rice per upazila is being sold daily at Tk30 per kg, said a Press Information Department (PID) release.

The PID said the regular OMS programme will continue as usual alongside the additional OMS initiative. Under the regular OMS programme, subsidised food grains are being sold daily through 1,081 centres nationwide, covering 12 city corporations, 52 district headquarters municipalities, 15 labour-intensive upazilas and five labour-intensive municipalities.

Through these centres, 1,417.5 tonnes of flour and 1,175 tonnes of rice are being sold daily. Loose flour is priced at Tk24 per kg, while rice is being sold at Tk30 per kg.

Despite adequate food stocks, a tendency for sporadic price hikes of fine rice has recently been observed in some areas of the country, the release noted, adding that the food ministry has instructed the authorities concerned to monitor the market regularly and take necessary legal action where required.

The prices of medium and coarse rice, however, remain stable, added the release.
