Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani has called for Pakistan to shift its agriculture sector towards high-value, export-oriented production, saying future growth should focus on quality rather than simply increasing output.
Speaking at the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) Export Trophy Awards in Karachi, Gilani said Pakistan’s rice production had reached nearly 10 million tonnes, but higher production alone would not be sufficient to improve the sector’s export performance.
He called for greater investment in agricultural research, modern milling technology, consistent quality controls, national branding and value-added products to help Pakistani rice command higher prices in international markets.
Gilani also backed REAP’s target of increasing the country’s rice exports to $5 billion.
He said strengthening farmers and improving the competitiveness of agricultural products would be critical to expanding Pakistan’s presence in international markets.
The Senate chairman said parliament would support policy initiatives aimed at strengthening the agriculture sector and improving its export potential.
Awards were also presented to leading rice exporters at the ceremony, which was attended by REAP Chairman Muhammad Raza, former association officials and representatives of the business community.
