DA’s ‘Masagana Rice Program’ increases rice supply in Puerto Princesa

By Rachel Ganancial

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA) — The Department of Agriculture (DA) has piloted the distribution of sacks of fertilizers and packs of biofertilizers to three main rice-producing areas in Puerto Princesa City to help boost the harvest of quality rice.

The DA’s program under the Masagana Rice Industry Development Program provided 500 sacks of fertilizers and 300 packs of biofertilizers to 300 farmers in barangays of Inagawan, Inagawan-sub, and Kamuning. The selected areas also possess a good irrigation system.

“Kapag napatunayang matagumpay ang programa, palalawakin ito sa iba pang mga barangay sa lungsod na may taniman ng palay upang mas marami pang magsasaka ang makinabang sa libreng binhi, pataba, at iba pang suportang agrikultural,” said the Puerto Princesa City Information Office.

There will be regular monitoring and assessment of crops to see if the assistance has become effective and served its purpose of increasing farmers’ harvests.

The department also extended free hybrid rice seeds and technical assistance from the City Agriculture Office.

The city government also shared views with the department that the continuous support of the government will help improve the livelihood of farmers and ensure a sufficient food supply in the city.

The DA has said that the program aims to enhance rice production significantly to meet self-sufficiency goals, increase farmers’ incomes, lower consumer prices, and enable the country to export rice again. (RG/JBG/PIA MIMAROPA-Palawan/Photos from City Agriculture Office)
