Bangladesh to procure 7 lakh MTs of rice, paddy locally

The government plans to procure 700,000 metric tonnes of rice and paddy from the current Aman season to ensure a stable food buffer and fair prices for farmers.

Of the amount, approximately 600,000 MT will be parboiled rice, 50,000 MT atap rice, and another 50,000 MT paddy.

Procurement prices have been fixed at Tk 50 per kg for parboiled rice, Tk 49 for atap rice, and Tk 34 for paddy, Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder said today (November 9) after a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee chaired by Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed.

Majumder told the media that the prices would cover the production costs and ensure farmers receive a reasonable profit.

The Aman procurement drive will begin on 20 November and continue until February next year.

Meanwhile, Salehuddin said rice prices were relatively stable. “The situation is under control. Food inflation has come down to some extent. Non-food inflation is where the pressure is coming from,” he said.

The adviser said the government is importing non-basmati boiled rice to ensure a smooth supply in the domestic market and strengthen the food security support system for low and fixed-income groups.

“We are importing boiled rice to ensure the food assistance package reaches the targeted population. We aim to keep essential food items within reach,” he added.

Bangladesh, the world’s third-largest rice producer, typically yields around 40 million tonnes of rice annually. However, natural disasters often disrupt production and lead to increased imports.
