Average rice price higher, pork down in early August

THE average retail price of well-milled rice edged up in early August, while fresh pork became cheaper, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
PSA data showed well-milled rice averaged P49.61 per kilogram (kg) on Aug. 1–5, up slightly from P49.30 in mid-July and P49.32 in early July.
The latest price was substantially higher than a year earlier at P40.61 and P40.35/kg in early and mid-August 2025, respectively.
Meanwhile, fresh pork with bones averaged P301.06/kg in early August, down from P306.16 in mid-July and P307.60 in early July.
Pork was also cheaper compared with P333.74/kg and P330.56 in early and mid-August 2025, respectively.
Galunggong (round scad) rose to an average P241.67/kg in early August from P238.62 in mid-July and P237.69 in early July. It was also higher than the P227.60 and P228.08/kg recorded in early and mid-August 2025, respectively.
In contrast, string beans fell to P104.10/kg from P109.87 in mid-July and P114.52 in early July. The latest price was also below the P112.92 and P111.47/kg in early and mid-August 2025.
Hawaiian ginger averaged P164.07/kg in early August, slightly higher than P162.49 in mid-July and P161.53 in early July. However, it remained cheaper than a year earlier, when prices stood at P185.65/kg in early August and P184.25 in mid-August.
Carabao mango prices climbed to P156.17/kg from P148.23 in mid-July and P145.75 in early July. But it was cheaper year on year, compared with P164.07 in early August and P167.29 in mid-August 2025.
Cooking oil averaged P200.04 per liter in early August, up slightly from P199.44 in mid-July and P199.11 in early July.
But unlike mangoes and ginger, cooking oil was also more expensive than a year earlier, when it averaged P184.50 per liter in early August and P184.47 in mid-August 2025.
