BRRI launches workshop on new rice projects

The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, in collaboration with the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Cereals of the United States, on Tuesday held an inception and planning workshop on heat tolerance and anaerobic germination priority rice projects at the BRRI Training Complex in Gazipur.
The workshop, funded by the US Department of State, focused on planning research to develop rice varieties resilient to heat stress and flooding, said a press release.
BRRI director for research Md Rafiqul Islam presided over the event. Director for administration and common service Aminul Islam, HM Beachell Rice Chair Professor at Texas A&M University Michael Thomson and Professor of Rice Genetics and Genomics at TAMU Endang Septiningsih attended as special guests.
Chief scientific officer and head of the plant breeding division of BRRI Khandakar Md Iftekharuddaula delivered the welcome address, while chief scientific officer and head of the BRRI regional station, Cumilla Mohammad Akhlasur Rahman gave the vote of thanks.
Scientists presented project plans, progress, trait and quantitative trait loci discovery, validation, transfer planning, implementation and deployment strategies, followed by discussions on both priority projects.
