Jakarta (ANTARA) – Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced that the government will build 100 new warehouses for the State Logistics Agency (Bulog), designed to preserve rice quality for at least two years, as part of efforts to strengthen the national food reserve system.

Speaking during a working meeting with Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday, Sulaiman said the project has received government approval with a budget allocation of around Rp5 trillion (approximately US$278 million) to reinforce Indonesia’s food logistics infrastructure.

“We are indeed building new warehouses. There will be 100 warehouse locations, valued at Rp5 trillion, and the project has already been approved,” he said.

The minister explained that the facilities will be equipped with modern storage technology capable of maintaining rice quality for a minimum of two years.

He added that the improved storage system is expected to extend rice preservation for up to three years without significantly affecting quality, compared to conventional storage methods currently in use.

According to Sulaiman, the new facilities will enhance the security of national food stocks while supporting the stability of rice supplies and prices across the country.

Government rice reserves have reached 3.5 million tons as of early June 2026.

The minister made the remarks in response to concerns raised by Chairperson of DPR Commission IV Siti Hediati Hariyadi, who said she had received reports indicating that some government rice reserves stored in Bulog warehouses had experienced quality deterioration.

Earlier, Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani said the construction of the 100 new warehouses would strengthen national food security by expanding post-harvest storage capacity.

“This assignment is a strategic step toward strengthening the national logistics system and food security,” Ramdhani said on April 2.
