SANGSAD BHABAN, June 8, 2026 (BSS) – The government has reported a total production of some 3,27,05,929 metric tons of  paddy during the ongoing Boro procurement season, according to a data from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), said State Minister for Food Md Abdul Bari in Parliament today.

Responding to a written question from ruling party lawmaker Md. Mostafizur Rahman Babul (Jamalpur-3) during the day’s question-answer session, the State Minister for Food said that although excessive rainfall caused significant damage to Boro crops in the Haor region, the government has taken timely measures to ensure procurement and protect farmers’ interests. The day’s sitting began with Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal in the chair.

Quoting official data, the State Minister said, “According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, a total of 3,27,05,929 metric tons of Boro paddy has been produced during the current procurement season.”

He added that following heavy rainfall-induced losses in the Haor belt, the government has strengthened its procurement and market support activities.

Highlighting the measures taken, the State Minister informed Parliament that internal paddy and rice procurement operations in Haor areas began on 03 May 2026, allowing farmers to dry their paddy at government storage yards and sell directly to government channels.

“As a result of the procurement drive, millers have also started purchasing paddy from farmers, which has ensured better market access for the growers,” he said.

The State Minister further said that special Open Market Sale (OMS) activities for rice and flour have been introduced in six Haor districts to provide relief to affected communities at subsidised prices.

“Under this initiative, rice and flour are being sold at affordable prices to support vulnerable households in the Haor region,” he added.

He also informed the House that directives have been issued to give priority to affected farmers in the government procurement process.

“Instructions have been given to ensure that farmers affected in the Haor region receive priority in selling their paddy to government procurement centres,” the State Minister told Parliament.
