By Pattaya Mail

Harvested GI-certified Hom Mali rice from northern and northeastern Thailand, as the Department of Intellectual Property reports that geographical indications have boosted Thai rice value to more than 8 billion baht nationwide in 2025.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) reports that Geographical Indications (GI) have increased the economic value of Thai rice to over 8 billion baht in the first three quarters of 2025.

The Department stated that 24 GI-registered Thai rice varieties from 31 provinces generated a combined economic value of over 8,000 million baht between January and September 2025. This demonstrates strong market recognition of Thai rice quality and distinctiveness, both domestically and internationally, and supports income security and improved livelihoods for more than 600,000 registered farming households.

Phayao Hom Mali Rice led GI rice products with an economic value exceeding 6,156 million baht, followed by Thung Kula Rong-Hai Hom Mali Rice, Ubon Ratchathani Hom Mali Rice, and other GI-certified varieties from across the country. These products are recognized for their unique aroma, texture, cultivation methods, and local environmental conditions.

The Department of Intellectual Property continues to promote GI rice registration and development in new areas to increase the value of local agricultural products, expand income distribution, and strengthen the capacity of local entrepreneurs and farmers to generate sustainable income. (NNT)
