Thailand cuts rice exports amid intensifying global competition

Source: World Grain

Thailand’s rice exports declined sharply in the 2024/25 marketing year as global competition — particularly among white rice producers — intensified. The information comes from a recent report by the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

According to FAS estimates, Thailand, traditionally one of the world’s top rice exporters, shipped only 7.5 million tonnes in 2024/25. This represents a 24% drop compared to the 9.9 million tonnes exported in the previous season.

The decrease was driven by “fierce price competition following India’s return to global markets and increased supplies from Vietnam,” the report noted. Export data for the first half of the current marketing year shows a notable decline in white rice shipments, while parboiled and fragrant varieties maintained stronger demand in premium markets.

The outlook for 2025/26 suggests a similar export volume, with FAS again forecasting 7.5 million tonnes. Despite the sharp decline compared to two years ago, Thailand is expected to retain its position as the world’s third-largest rice exporter, behind India and Vietnam.

Rice production in 2025/26 is projected at 20.48 million tonnes — slightly lower than the previous year but still the fourth-largest harvest on record. Ending stocks are expected to remain robust at 3–4 million tonnes, helping to support price stability amid heightened global competition.
