World Rice Prices Fall to 2015 Levels

The base price of rice in Asia has dropped to the lowest level in the past decade. This situation will lead to a decrease in expenses for households and countries dependent on imports, according to agronews.ua.

Bloomberg reports that, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Association, wholesale prices for Thai white rice with 5% broken grains fell by 1.9% to $355 per ton – the lowest since September 30, 2015.

Although export prices do not immediately translate to retail prices, cheaper supplies from leading producing countries such as Thailand could lead to a decrease in the price of rice, which is a staple food for Asia, Africa, and some parts of the Middle East. It is vital for billions of people and constitutes 50% of the diet for many residents of Southeast Asia.

Rice prices, which rose to a 15-year high in 2024 due to high demand and supply concerns, are gradually decreasing as crop forecasts improve.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, global rice production in the 2025-26 season is expected to reach a record 556.4 million tons, leading to an increase in reserves.

Furthermore, the prospects for this season’s harvest are improving, with monsoon rains in India – the world’s largest rice exporter. This may increase the global surplus and lead to an increase in exports from this country. New Delhi had previously lifted export restrictions on this product to prevent an oversupply in the domestic market.
