There is ample supply in Southeast Asia

REUTERS — Indian rice prices rose for a second straight week on rupee strength despite sluggish demand. Meanwhile, ample global supplies pushed Vietnamese rates lower.

India’s 5 percent broken parboiled variety was quoted at $382-$387 per ton, up from last week’s $380-$386. 

Indian 5 percent broken white rice was priced at $375-$381 per ton this week.

“The rupee is very volatile, this week it rose more than one percent which forced exporters to raise prices,” said a Kolkata-based dealer with a trade house.

India’s state reserves of rice, including unmilled paddy, totaled a record 59.5 million metric tons as of June 1, far exceeding the government’s target of 13.5 million tons for July 1.

Rice prices fell in Vietnam and Thailand

Vietnam’s 5 percent broken rice was offered at $383 per metric ton on Thursday. This was down from $387 a week ago, according to the Vietnam Food Association.

“Prices fell on strong global supplies, particularly from India,” a trader based in Ho Chi Minh City said.

“Prolonged rains in the Mekong Delta over the recent days have also affected rice quality of the ongoing summer-autumn harvest there,” the trader added.

Thailand’s 5 percent broken rice slipped to a range of $385-$390 per tonne down from $397 quoted last week.

Traders said that the decline was due to quiet demand and more supply and noted the possibility of prices declining further.

A Bangkok-based trader said there is a lot of supply. Thailand’s second harvest is coming out along with more from producers in Vietnam, Pakistan, Philippines and India.

“Expect prices to go down further, as there have not been any large orders this year and there’s a lot of supply,” the trader added.

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, domestic rice prices remained high despite adequate stocks. The Trading Corp. of Bangladesh reported a 3.5-percent increase over the past week, putting pressure on consumers.
