BINTANGOR (Nov 3):  A new rice variety has been developed by a Meradong-based company in the Sungai Padi Bintangor area.

In this respect, Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing hailed the achievement by Onemas Agriculture Sdn Bhd as a ‘significant milestone for the rice planting industry in the region’.

“This new rice variety took approximately 30 days to germinate in the seedling nursery. After that, the seedlings were transplanted to the paddy fields, and within 100 days, the rice will mature and be ready for harvest.

“The success of the hybrid rice planting project is crucial as it enables the establishment of new sites for this crop, providing economic opportunities for the local population,” he said in his speech in a simple ceremony at the Sungai Padi Bintangor today, held prior to distributing the new rice to the local residents.

It is informed that this new variety is named ‘Beras Onemas’.

Ding also hailed the project’s success, believing that it could bring about significant economic benefits to the people of Meradong District in the future.

“The dedication of Onemas Agriculture Sdn Bhd in taking various steps and approaches towards expanding rice cultivation in this area is commendable.

“At the same time, we hope the relevant ministry would consider reopening the mini farms or paddy fields at Sungai Tulai,” he added.

The packs of ‘Beras Onemas’ yesterday were distributed to four areas – the ‘Kedai Kopi’ (Coffee Shop) Sungai Padi Bintangor; Rumah Junis at Sungai Kelupu; Rumah Dangat; and Rumah Temaga at Sungai Kawi.

Also present were the Meradong District Agricultural assistant officer Pulin Inchan, and Onemas Agriculture Sdn Bhd executive chairman Stephen Sia.
