Pursat Governor urges farmers to limit dry season rice cultivation

Pursat Provincial Governor Khoy Rida has urged farmers to refrain from planting dry season rice more than twice, citing potential irrigation water shortages, particularly in areas distant from water sources. He emphasised the need for farmers to prepare to store water for daily use in these affected regions during the dry season.

This request followed his inspection of rice cultivation progress at the end of the rainy season, during which he distributed organic fertiliser to farmers in Bakan and Talou Senchey districts.

Rida noted that while some farmers are harvesting rice at the end of the rainy season, others are beginning to plant a second crop. He warned that with temperatures expected to rise between 45 and 46 degrees Celsius in November, water shortages could become critical. Consequently, he instructed local authorities to inform farmers to suspend dry season rice cultivation for a second or third planting in severely affected areas and to maintain ponds, wells, and canals for daily use.

Oeun Chantha, a spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, confirmed that farmers typically harvest their first dry season rice crop in January or February. After this harvest, they may plant a second crop, which can lead to irrigation water shortages in some areas.

He pointed out that provinces surrounding Tonle Sap Lake are primarily where farmers grow dry season rice. These provinces have reservoirs and irrigation systems, alleviating concerns for those regions. However, farmers cultivating rice far from water sources may face significant risks. Therefore, he advised farmers to select planting locations near water sources.

Chantha noted that the Ministry will instruct all departments of water resources and meteorology to establish irrigation policies for dry season rice production, clarifying how much rice can be grown in specific areas during the dry season.

To address this issue, the Ministry is preparing water for irrigating dry season rice through various irrigation systems. In certain regions, the Ministry has restored reservoirs and is planning to transfer water from areas with abundant resources to assist dry season rice cultivation in water-scarce locations. The Ministry aims to expand reservoir capacity as part of its medium-term strategy.
