Millers reluctant to mention prices, varieties on rice sacks
Daily Sun Report, Dhaka
The millers are still reluctant to comply with the food ministry’s order to mention prices and varieties on the sacks of rice from 14 April.
Amidst the country’s struggle with escalating prices of essential goods, the food ministry issued a circular on 21 February to ensure the rational pricing of rice in the local market.
The circular also said that the millers will have to obey the instruction from 14 April 14.
However, two days after the deadline, mill owners and traders are now saying that it is impractical to implement the ministry’s order before the harvesting of the new paddy.
Meanwhile, the millers have applied to the food ministry for an extension of the deadline by at least one more month.
The food ministry in its circular mentioned that the violation of the directive will be punishable with a maximum imprisonment of five years or a fine of Tk 15 lakh or both.
According to the ministry order, the variety of rice and the mill gate price must be written on the rice bags.
The manufacturing date and the name of the manufacturers, their locations (district and upazila) and weight information must be written on the rice sacks to make the government efforts a success.
However, upon visiting various parts of the country, including Nagaon and Chapainawabganj, our correspondents found that millers were not obeying the ministry order.
