Tech-Infused Agriculture: Transforming Rice Production in Cote d’Ivoire

In a bold move intended to revolutionize the agricultural sector, Dr. Diomand Metangbo, a researcher at the University of Korhogo, has launched a tech-driven initiative aimed at amplifying rice production in Gagnoa, Cote d’Ivoire. The project, supported by the Fonds pour la science, la technologie et l’innovation (FONSTI), hinges on the use of a smartphone application to provide farmers with vital information that can influence their cultivation practices.

Technology Meets Agriculture

The ground-breaking application offers weekly weather forecasts, enabling farmers to plan their planting schedules effectively and mitigate the risk of crop inundation due to unforeseen rainfall. As climate change continues to upend traditional weather patterns, this tool could provide a critical line of defense for farmers in the region.

Addressing Soil Degradation

But the application does more than just provide weather updates. It offers vital insights into soil quality, a key factor for successful cultivation. It also provides technical guidance for rice farming, a measure that could significantly enhance production yields. This initiative is particularly relevant given the increasing concern over soil degradation due to overexploitation.

FONSTI’s Role in Innovation

FONSTI, established in June 2028, is a fund dedicated to supporting research and innovation projects that contribute to the socio-economic and cultural development of Cote d’Ivoire. The fund operates on a competitive ‘call for projects’ basis, with two projects selected by the scientific council each year for funding. The smartphone application project is one such initiative that promises to bring about substantial change in the agricultural sector of the country.
