361 sacks of govt rice seized in Savar, three held

Ariful Islam Sabbir

Police in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, seized 361 sacks of government rice along with a truck on Wednesday and arrested three people, including the driver and his helper.

The operation was carried out in the Pakija More area on the Dhaka–Aricha Highway by members of Savar Model Police Station.

According to police, officers signalled a Paturia-bound truck for a routine check in the morning. During the search, they found 361 sacks of rice, each weighing 30kg, inside the vehicle. The sacks were labelled as belonging to the Food Department.

When asked to produce consignment papers and valid documents, the driver and accompanying individuals failed to provide any. The police subsequently seized the rice and the truck and took them to the police station.

Sub-Inspector Md Niamat of Savar Model Police Station said the rice was being transported illegally, allegedly towards Bhanga in Faridpur district, without proper authorization.

“The truck carrying 361 sacks of government rice has been seized, and three individuals, including the driver and helper, have been arrested. No valid party or documentation was found for the transportation,” he said.

Police added that an investigation is underway to identify those involved in the illegal transportation of government food supplies.
