If rice is on the menu this week, check your ingredients. A nationwide recall has been issued for a brand of jasmine rice sold at major retailers, including Wegmans, Target, Walmart, Giant, and Hy-vee stores. Wegmans grocery chain issued a recall notice on April 4 for Lundberg Organic Jasmine White Rice due to the possible presence of foreign material.
Lundberg Family Farms, which manufactures the product, confirmed the voluntary recall to USA Today. It’s not clear what the foreign material may be, but foreign matter could pose a safety risk. The Class II recall is limited to a single production run. A Class II recall means the “product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).1 No illnesses have been reported, and the packages were pulled from store shelves out of an abundance of caution. Customers should check their pantries for the affected product.
The ongoing recall has been reported to the FDA. It includes 4,500 cases of rice sold in 2-pound bags with the following information:
- UPC Code: 073416-040281
- Best-By Dates: 02/01/2027, 02/02/2027
- Lot Codes: 260201, 260202
The FDA has not published a recall on its website and no other stores have issued a recall on their websites at this time. Customers should not eat the product. Wegmans announced that customers may return products purchased at their stores for a full refund. It’s not clear how customers who purchased the affected rice from other stores should approach the recall, so those customers should contact the place of purchase directly.
