In a recent development, Piyush Goyal launched the sale of Bharat rice at a subsidised rate. The Food Minister of India launched it at Kartavya Path in New Delhi on February 6. There are some significant reasons behind the Indian government’s decision to introduce selling this rice at subisidised rates for customers.

Launched just on Tuesday, Bharat rice is introduced at an affordable price to help customers at a time of a 15 per cent increase in grain retail costs in about a year, according to a report by Economic Times. This rice will be available for sale in two different packs of 5 kg and 10 kg. The subsidised rate of this newly launched rice by Piyush Goyal is ₹29/kg.

In the event organised for the launch of rice under the ‘Bharat’ brand, Piyush Goyal shared how the government of India is committed to the welfare of farmers and providing ration items at pocket-friendly rates. Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, about 81 crore people are receiving free food grains already. Now, the initiative has been increased for an additional 5 years. This scheme is helping poor households to save about ₹1500-₹2000 per month, shared Pisulsh Goyal.

The Minister has also flagged off 100 mobile vans for the sale of Bharat rice. Vehicles flagged off by him will carry rice and distribute it to different distribution agencies, according to a report by News On AIR. Piyush Goyal stated about ₹27,000 crore under the Price Stabilised Funds is used to provide such products at subsidised process.

In the first phase of the initiative, the Food Corporation of India will be providing a total of 5 lakh tonnes of rice to 2 cooperatives of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India. The Food Corporation of India will also provide rice to Kendriya Bhandar. Later, these departments will pack rice in 5 kg and 10 kg packs. The Economic Times report stated how these rice packs will then be sold under the name of the ‘Bharat’ brand. Not just from stores and outlets, Bharat rice will be available on e-commerce platforms as well.
