The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert detailing precautionary measures in response to the threat of potential drought conditions caused by significantly reduced rainfall.
According to a circular issued to commissioners, deputy commissioners, and relevant departments across Punjab, the Meteorological Department reports a 38% decrease in winter rainfall across the province. The areas of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Rahim Yar Khan face the highest risk of drought.
PDMA Punjab warned that reduced rainfall could adversely affect Rabi season crops. Additionally, a potential decrease in rice production may lead to substantial economic losses for local farmers.
Director-General PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, emphasized the importance of proactively informing farmers about potential water scarcity. He highlighted that arrangements have already been made in anticipation of water shortages in Thal and Cholistan regions, urging local administration to remain vigilant.
Kathia also stated that the School education department will be involved in awareness campaigns. He underscored that preventive measures could help mitigate crop damage, emphasizing collective responsibility in addressing the anticipated water shortage.
