Telangana issues fresh notices to rice millers over ₹140 crore CMR dues

By ChiniMandi

Sangareddy: Civil Supplies officials in Telangana are preparing to issue fresh notices to rice millers in the erstwhile Medak district over outstanding dues linked to Custom Milled Rice (CMR), giving defaulters until the end of October to settle their payments, The New Indian Express reported.

The action follows allegations that several millers diverted government rice to other states during the 2022-23 period instead of supplying it within the stipulated deadline. Officials also alleged that some millers diverted the funds into real estate and other businesses.

The government had earlier directed officials to recover the outstanding amounts and notices were issued with a deadline of August 31. However, several millers failed to clear their dues, prompting the department to provide another opportunity until October-end.

In Medak district, around 30 rice millers owe nearly ₹100 crore to the government. Officials are expected to serve fresh notices within the next few days.

Civil Supplies DM Jayasree said five millers in Sangareddy district also have outstanding dues of around ₹20 crore and would receive fresh notices following the extension.

She warned that millers who fail to clear their dues by the end of October could face recovery proceedings under the Revenue Recovery Act.

Officials said around 10 rice millers in Siddipet district also have pending CMR-related dues, with efforts underway to recover the amounts by October-end.

Meanwhile, the Rice Millers Association is scheduled to hold a meeting in Hyderabad on Wednesday as pressure mounts on millers to settle the government dues. Rice mill owners from across Telangana have been invited, while some retired officials are also expected to attend the meeting.

The fresh recovery drive underscores the government’s efforts to recover public funds linked to CMR rice diverted during the 2022-23 period.
